1. Who we are
This policy is issued by Lung Cancer Europe, a European non-profit organisation representing people affected by lung cancer across Europe.
For the purposes of EU data protection law (GDPR) and the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP), Lung Cancer Europe acts as the data controller for personal data collected through this website and through the activities described in this policy.
We are based in Switzerland and are committed to protecting your privacy and handling your personal data in line with European and Swiss data protection law.

2. What this policy covers
This policy explains what personal data we collect, why we collect it, how we use it, who we share it with, how long we keep it, and your rights under the GDPR and the Swiss FADP.
This policy covers our website and our general activities. Where we run a specific survey or research project, that project may have its own privacy notice, which is given to you at the point you take part and which governs the data collected there.
3. Data we collect
A. Newsletter subscriptions (MailChimp)
If you subscribe to our newsletter, we collect your name (if provided), your email address, your language preference (if selected), and technical data such as IP address and sign-up timestamp.
We use this to send newsletters and updates, manage language preferences, and monitor engagement in aggregated form such as open and click rates. Newsletter data is processed through MailChimp, our email provider.
Legal basis: Consent (Article 6(1)(a) GDPR). You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in every email.
B. Website usage data
When you visit this website, technical information may be collected automatically by Squarespace (our hosting platform), embedded analytics tools if enabled, and cookie management tools. This may include IP address, browser type, device type, pages visited, and date and time of access.
We use this to keep the website working, improve performance, and understand how content is accessed in aggregated form.
Legal basis: Legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). Where required, consent is requested before non-essential cookies are activated.
C. Translations (Weglot)
This website uses Weglot to provide automated translations. When you select a language, a cookie may store your preference and technical browsing data may pass through Weglot's systems to deliver translated content. Weglot does not use your data for marketing via this website.
Legal basis: Legitimate interest in providing multilingual access across Europe.
D. Website design tools (SquareKicker)
We use SquareKicker as a design extension within Squarespace. It operates within the Squarespace environment and does not independently collect personal data from visitors.
E. News content
This website publishes news, policy updates and educational information. Browsing does not require you to provide personal data unless you subscribe to our newsletter.
F. Typeform - form submissions
If you submit news through our member submission form, we may collect your name, organisation, email address, the content of your submission, and any documents, links or images you upload.
We use this to review, assess, edit and publish approved content, and to contact you about your submission. Submissions are processed through Typeform, our form provider.
Legal basis: Legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR) in managing editorial content and communications with member organisations.
We ask contributors not to include identifiable personal data relating to people affected by lung cancer or other third parties unless they have explicit consent.
G. Surveys and research
Lung Cancer Europe conducts surveys and other research to understand the experiences of people affected by lung cancer across Europe. Depending on the project, this may include information about your health, which is special category data under Article 9 of the GDPR and sensitive personal data under the Swiss FADP.
Taking part is always voluntary. Each survey or research project may have its own privacy notice and consent wording, provided to you before you take part. That notice tells you what is collected, what it is for, who processes it, how long it is kept, and how to exercise your rights, and it governs the data collected in that project.
We publish our findings in anonymised or aggregated form, unless we have told you otherwise and you have agreed to it before taking part.
Legal basis: as set out in the privacy notice for the specific project. Where health data is involved, we rely on your explicit consent (Article 9(2)(a) GDPR) unless the project notice states another applicable condition.
H. Anonymous forms and feedback
From time to time we invite ideas and feedback through short, anonymous forms, for example to help name or improve our tools, campaigns and communications. These forms do not ask for your name, contact details or any health or other sensitive information, and we ask you not to include anything that could identify you or another person in free-text answers. We use the responses only to guide the relevant work, and if we publish results do so in anonymised or aggregated form.
Legal basis: our legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR) in developing our work with community input. Because these forms are anonymous, we do not hold data that identifies you.
4. Software tools
We use a range of software tools and service providers to help us run our website and deliver our work, for example for hosting, email, translation, forms, storage and analysis. Where personal data is involved, these are used under appropriate agreements and safeguards, as described in sections 6 and 7.
Our use of artificial intelligence and automated tools is addressed separately in Addendum A to this policy.
5. Cookies
This website uses cookies to enable core functionality, remember language preferences, and support analytics where enabled. You can manage cookie preferences via the cookie banner on the website.
6. Data sharing
We share personal data only with service providers and suppliers necessary to run this website and deliver our work, including:
Squarespace (website hosting)
MailChimp (email distribution)
Weglot (translation delivery)
Typeform (member news submissions and adhoc surveys)
DeepL (translation)
Survey, form and analysis providers used for a specific research project, named in that project's privacy notice
Approved research and communications suppliers engaged to support specific projects, working under contract and on our instructions
These providers and suppliers process data under contractual agreements designed to comply with the GDPR and the Swiss FADP.
We do not sell or rent personal data, and we do not share identifiable survey responses with funders, member organisations or commercial partners.
7. International data transfers
Some service providers may process data outside the European Economic Area or Switzerland. Where this occurs, appropriate safeguards are in place, such as Standard Contractual Clauses and Data Processing Agreements.
8. How long we keep your data
Newsletter data is kept until you unsubscribe, or until we remove inactive contacts during periodic list reviews
Analytics data is kept in line with the default retention settings of the relevant platform
Member news submissions are kept for as long as needed to manage and publish the content and for our editorial records
Survey and research data is kept for the period set out in that project's privacy notice. Anonymised or aggregated data may be kept for long-term reference
9. Your rights
Under the GDPR and the Swiss FADP, you have the right to access your personal data, request correction or deletion, restrict or object to processing, request a copy in a portable format, withdraw consent, and lodge a complaint with your national data protection authority or the Swiss Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner.
Withdrawing consent does not affect processing carried out before the withdrawal. These rights apply to data we hold in a form that allows us to identify you. Once responses have been anonymised, we may no longer be able to link them to you in order to act on a request, and we are not required to collect additional information to do so. Where this applies to a research project, it is explained in that project's privacy notice.

10. Data security
We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect personal data against unauthorised access, loss or misuse. However, no internet transmission can be guaranteed to be fully secure.
11. Automated translations
This website uses Weglot to provide translations into multiple languages. Translations are generated automatically and have not been individually reviewed for accuracy. Automated translations may contain errors. For medical decisions, please rely on the original English content or consult a qualified healthcare professional.
12. Updates to this policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be published on this page with an updated revision date.
Addendum A to the Lung Cancer Europe privacy policy
Use of artificial intelligence and automated tools
Dated: 8 July 2026
This addendum forms part of the Lung Cancer Europe privacy policy.
Artificial intelligence is becoming part of healthcare, including lung cancer care. Lung Cancer Europe is not only observing that shift, we are actively involved in it, through our participation in IDERHA and i3Lung, through our Delphi research on large language models in clinical decision-making, and through the development of the Lung Cancer Europe Chatbot.
Our position on the role of artificial intelligence in lung cancer care is set out in full in our published position statement, Lung Cancer Europe Statement on the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to support lung cancer care, July 2026. It sets out three principles:
Trust in artificial intelligence must be earned, not assumed
Artificial intelligence should support, not replace, healthcare professionals
Involvement in the development of artificial intelligence means more than consultation, it means participation
These are the standards we encourage the wider field to adopt. They are also the standards we hold ourselves to.
Lung Cancer Europe may use software tools, including artificial intelligence tools, to support our work. We are developing an internal policy governing how these tools are used by our staff and suppliers, and the safeguards that apply where personal data is involved. This addendum will be updated to set out those safeguards once that policy is agreed.
In the meantime, the data sharing, international transfer and security provisions of the main privacy policy apply to any processing of your personal data.
