Lung Cancer Europe position on the EU Biotech Act
A POLICY BRIEFING | OCTOBER 2026
The EU Biotech Act aims to make health biotechnology in Europe faster and more competitive, with quicker clinical trials and support for new treatments. Lung Cancer Europe welcomes that aim.
But new treatments and tests only help people with lung cancer if they reach them, in every member state. Access to biomarker testing, trials and treatment is still inconsistent and unequal across Europe.
This position statement sets out six changes we are asking the European Parliament and the Council to make as they negotiate the final text. It draws on the European Patients’ Forum’s recommendations and adds what is specific to lung cancer.
Key Points
Our position
Tie public support to unmet medical need, real benefit and enforceable commitments on access.
Delete the proposed 12-month extension of supplementary protection certificates, or restrict it strictly.
Make sure combined studies lead to biomarker testing that people can actually get.
Protect trial quality and make trials easier to join across borders.
Give patient organisations a funded, structured role in governing the Act.
Safeguard trial participants’ data rights and align the Act with health technology assessment.
